Sailing Two is built on the Sailing One foundation. Students sail in bigger, double-handed, sloop-rigged RS Quests. The two students per boat alternate as skipper and crew in group practice drills.

The course covers correct nomenclature, rigging, beach departure and landing technique, steering, tacking, jibing, points of sail, sail trim, and fundamental aerodynamic theory.  When the weather is right, we conduct capsize recovery drills using the “scoop method” a double-handed recovery technique.

After a daily shoreside briefing, juniors practice sailing around a course of color-coded buoys, strategically laid out to emphasize the target skill of that day’s lesson plan. Each day is a bit different. Each day builds on the last.

Tod’s Point has its own proprietary student manuals. There is one for each course of the Core. They supplement home study for final exam prep. Students who pass the exam and demonstrate proficiency in all prescribed skills, are awarded a diploma.

Younger juniors, 9-10, and those under 90 lbs., ought to take this course twice before tackling Sailing Three. It’s not just about skill and smarts. They need time to grow, mature, and increase live ballast!
